little rip-off.
Little Cupcakes Shop 7, Degraves Street, Melbourne
Now usually I would be all for a bakery entirely dedicated to cupcakes; I live and breathe the little things. But when I walked into Little Cupcakes on Degraves Street (just off Flinders) I was hardly impressed. The sign was painted fairly crudely on the window (perhaps going for a trendy DIY thing, but it seriously did not look good) and while you can't expect any store on Degraves Street to be sizable, I could barely fit in the door. The problem? They've tried to turn the space into a cafe, and it doesn't work. The chairs take up what precious little room there is, and I was left feeling cluttered and a little overwhelmed even when I was the only one in store.
The cupcake selection was frankly, lame. If you're going to be a cupcake bakery, you need to know a few more recipes than 3 different types of chocolate and red velvet, because let's face it, red velvet is just chocolate with food dye chucked in anyway. Besides the limited flavour choices which were even more limited than usual, (the entire case was empty save for 5 cupcakes and it was only 12noon) the cupcakes were fairly outrageously priced, poorly packaged (mine fell over and disintegrated before I had the chance to taste it) and not so tasty. I'm not a big fan of bakeries that go for looks over taste, and this was a huge case of that. Fondant icing is for losers and I doubt I'll be back to this place again, which is so disappointing... because I really needed this!

Ding Dong Lounge Lvl 1, 18 Market Lane, Melbourne
Ding Dong is a venue that has a lot of potential to be cool, but doesn't quite cut it. The place itself is one of those bars that you know looks hideous in the daylight -- black painted walls, glitzy curtains; the entire thing is a strange mix between half-arsed and over-done. I can never understand why so many artists sign up to play at Ding Dong - the stage area is small and crappy and the dancing area is virtually non-existent due to some really badly placed steps. It's too small to be a proper gig venue, yet too hollow and spacious to be a friendly little bar. I'm not sure the target market here, but I always feel a little seedy and displaced after leaving here. That said, the toilets are pretty good, there's some memorable and amusing graffiti in there, and the girls at the ticket counter are kinda rockabilly and pretty cute.
!
Cherry 103 Flinders La, Melbourne
Cherry is a strange bar, you never quite know what to expect when you go there - 70's funk, hardcore punk or a mix of everything in between. The lack of seating always irritates me, because I've passed the days of getting hideously drunk and gyrating in front of the entirety of Melbourne -- but for those who like to get their groove on, there's a pretty decent sized space to do so in, in front of the stage area with seating around the edges. The top level of the bar (it goes down the stairs to the dance/stage section) is pretty cosy and has that nice worn in punky feel without being totally grimy, the bartenders are always pretty friendly and the bathrooms aren't totally repugnant. A good place to go to get a beer or two, but I can never stay here for too long.
