We all have fond memories of Robot. Most of us can count at least one night that ended in hurling/being hurled out of the bar by the bouncer/a terrible hangover. Much like a rite of passage, really. Funnily enough, those memorable nights were marked by imbibing in copious amounts of sake.
It's hard not to, though, if you are a sake fan. (I'm not, but I still succumbed to the lure of those dainty cups and that blasted earthenware bottle one night...) You can, however, choose your consequences by going for the more premium Sake blends (Yoshi will not bat an eyelid if you go up to the bar and order "One large Bishonen" - which translates as one large beautiful boy - and is a brand of Sake.) Apparently if one drinks better sake, one gets less of a hangover.
Robot is an old favourite with the Friday night crowd, and it is near impossible to get a seat on a Friday evening. There is something comforting about returning to Robot - it's almost like going home. Things rarely change - you still get the same fantastic service from Yoshi and the crew, and they don't complain about you ordering $8 Samidaras until it comes to the fifth one. (Check out their delightful cocktail list!) Just go easy on the sake.
I went to robot with a few friends one freezing night about a year ago when I was in Melbourne. It was super cool! I just wished we had something like it in Sydney, hmm... maybe I better move to Melbourne?? Definitely worth going to check out, next time I'm in Melbourne on a tuesday... I'm there!
Plan your escape. Relive your childhood and go back to a time when your world didn’t revolve around work, money, school or politics. A time when Astroboy and Voltron were your heroes and your imagination ran wild in the bizarre world of anime.
Blitz into Neo-Tokyo, Aussie style at contempo Robot Bar tucked away in one of Melbourne’s niche alleys. Robot commander Andre Bishop has created a bar full of funky character, decked out with memorabilia that pays tribute to the ‘Land of the Rising Sun’ and it’s intriguing anime and manga creations. The Iconic Gozira and Transformers are present, and you can even buy chocolate Pokky from the bar.
On top of its wide variety of alcoholic drinks, the bar also stocks a good selection of Asian beers and quality Japanese ‘sake’. Unwind with a refreshing Asahi or Kirin while grooving to the ambient beats chosen by barman Yoshi. Or pop by on Tuesdays for free weekly anime screenings and indulge the inner child within.
In a city where the microbar scene has exploded, it is the old-school bars like Robot that up its appeal by staying cooly understated. With a relaxed open door policy that welcomes anyone and everyone, Robot is definitely worth a visit for a good time.
