Golden Monkey

First thing that strikes about this place is the decor and layout, it is akin to an opium den from a spy movie, the chairs and the lattice work are awesome and if I was more of a kleptomaniac I would have taken them home.
The cocktail list is extensive and creative, my favorite being the vodka and chili based Phoenix Claw.
The Asian Tapas is first rate but comes with a first class price tag - I recommend the Shanghai basket.
The floor staff are attentive and inviting, but on a busy night can take some prompting, though this is not taken badly.
Golden Monkey is so eager to please that they are not above playing a bit of BonJovi for the after work set - avoid at all costs - as the ID wearing stuffed shirts are more than happy to sing along!
have you tried to get a seat in a melbourne bar on a weekend?? its near impossible, and you have to contend with being wedged in a smoky bar with hundreds of punters and end up waiting half an hour for your drink at the bar...
Monkey is one of the last places you can count on in melbourne where you can get a seat...and damn fine seats they are too! To make the deal even sweeter, the waiters come to YOU for your orders... negating the need to line up like a sheep waiting to be sheared. The cocktail menu has gone from strength to strength. Golden monkey is definitely for the discerning punter!
loved it! loved it! loved it! was only heading down for one drink but ended up there until close. delicious cocktails, the cutest and most attentive staff and an awesome selection of Asian tapas: this place is my new home away from home... great job!
This place is awesome... best place to chill with mates for any occasion. Service is over the top, drinks go down nicely, and the setting is beautiful. Definately recomend it.
Step into Golden Monkey and you will feel like you have just left the streets of Melbourne and entered into an underworld opium den. Oriental screens and antique rosewood furniture create a mazelike labyrinth of small alcoves. Gentle subtle lighting with silk cushions laid out on traditional style opium beds provides the perfect setting for ‘Chasing the Dragon’ or in the case of Golden Monkey, a few choice drinks.
Owners Andre, Adam and Mike came up with the idea of creating a nouveau space that would celebrate the East-meets-West beauty of 1920's Shanghai while still capturing that unique Asian essence. Golden Monkey opened its doors late last year and looks set to bring it’s own blend of style and character to the Melbourne bar scene.
Golden Monkey offers a unique dining and drinking experience with a range of International beers and accompanying Asian tapas. The cocktail list has been specially selected, blending Eastern and Western ingredients for unique taste. Try the house recommendation - Monkey Nuts, a creamy cocktail of sweet flavours interspersed with the crunchiness of nuts. Need something with a bit more sidekick? Pick your poison from the Five Assasins - a collection of lethal shots. Coffee geeks will be glad to know that acclaimed head-roaster Mark Dundon of St Ali has crafted a special blend for Monkey.
Looked after by an elegant attentive staff in cheong sams and suits, Golden Monkey will soon have you reliving those moments from your favourite Chinese gangster movies.
