Some call it Chinese poison. Others call it rocket fuel. No matter who calls it what, Moutai Kweichow is China’s ‘number 1’ lethal drink and Double Happiness bar is where you can knock back a shot.
The walls of Double Happiness are lined with Socialist propaganda posters and a forbidding statue of Chairman Mao watches on imposingly as if waiting for you to step out of line. Far removed from the days of the cultural revolution, Double Happiness exudes a funky laidback Oriental style with a twist of homely familiarity.
Modest glass doors out front hide the fact that this neat watering hole serves some of the best tasting cocktails Melburnians could ask for. Hoholas with a giant burst of juicy lychee sweetness are the perfect cool down for hot steamy nights. Then there is the ‘Big Beard Wang’, named after Chairman Mao’s personal hairdresser and the Dictatorship of the Proletariat (which basically speaks for itself!). Playing along with the Chinese theme, most mixes have an added Asian touch with dashes of ginger, cardamon, chilli, coriander and fennel. For the truly adventurous, Moutai, with it’s amazing paint stripping effects and ability to induce severe memory loss will leave you feeling doubly happy. :)
Owner Tom Rattison used to be an avid ping-pong player in his high school days. And in August 2002 when Melbourne’s first Chinese themed bar opened its doors to thirsty Melburnians, he named it after the brand of ping pong balls he was used top-spinning – ‘Double Happiness’.
As the ancient Chinese proverb goes – ‘If you see in your wine the reflection of a person not in your range of vision, don't drink it.’.
