Apart from being charming romantics with a keen sense of fashion, the French have mastered more than a few tricks in the kitchen.

Down Degraves St, it’s hard to miss the temptingly sweet aroma wafting from Waffle On. Started by owner Frenchie Marc Laucher in July 2003, the quaint little stall stands out from the rest with distinct red pillars graffed by street talents. The walls of the cosy waffle shop are decorated with knick-knack memorabilia from Laucher’s travels around France and the world.

Laucher says the key to his waffles is in simplicity and he likes keeping them original flavoured with the option of choosing from 6 toppings to send your glucose levels skyrocketing. These palm sized pick-me-up sweet treats are prepared according to a traditional Belgian recipe worth busting your calorie count over. Tiny rocks of sugar ‘beets’ specially imported from Belgium are pressed into the raw dough before cooking giving an authentic Belgian flavour. Each waffle is served freshly grilled so they’re nice and crispy on the outside, warm and toasty on the inside and dusted over with a fair sprinkling of icing sugar. A great start to those dreary early mornings.

The best part about heading over to Waffle On is without doubt the experience of having a chat with Laucher himself. Laucher, with his twinkling blue eyes, friendly smile and divine accent makes buying a waffle so much more than simply buying a waffle. Every so often someone pops by and the cafe will erupt in animated French conversation. Even if you don't speak the language, sit back and appreciate the smooth tones of langue de l'amour.
