Great service!

Have been to Shoya a few times for birthday celebrations. Have only dined in the Traditional room and done karaoke in the private rooms, but have always enjoyed excellent service and food.

Classy Japanese BBQ

By Vince on 15 Mar 07

We had the $50 bbq set at Shoya which included both seafood and a variety of meat. You start off with a sashimi salad, followed by a slender piece of wagyu sashimi. The exquisite marbling hints at the easy life this cow had, probably getting daily sake rub-downs. Next comes an equally tasty selection of beef tongue, ribs and sirloin which you grill to your liking over the BBQ. The BBQ deserves a mention. All smoke is sucked downwards through an exhaust leaving you smelling good enough to continue the night elsewhere.
A seafood selection follows, with Calamari, a fish which was probably mackarel a jumbo sized prawn and abalone which can be cooked in it's shell steaming in it's own juices.
Once you're done with the seafood, the meat assault is on again, with tender pieces of chicken and belly pork. At this stage you get some rice and wakame miso soup to fill up your bellies. At the very end of this gastronomic assault on the waistline, you get a massive snag, because we are in Australia after all.
Shoya also has an impressive sake selection, with an equally impressive price range that is best left for connoisseurs or the filthy rich. We had the beginner level kikusui. The sake guy (I think there is only one as we waited ages for our sake), pours to overfilling in true Japanese fashion. You are meant to drink the sake from both glass and container.
Excellent service and ambience straight out of Japan
