Botchulism
11 Sep 08 - 20 Sep 08

A black comedy set in a plastic surgery clinic, Botchulism is a satirical dissection of plastic surgery, mateship and monkeys. The play opens with the arrest and detainment of a young socialist activist by the clinic’s surgeon and her spin doctor, to ensure his ‘rehabilitation’ into mainstream society. His Po-Mo erotic photographer mother attempts to come to his rescue, but is detained and interrogated herself, meanwhile an anarchist revolutionary in disguise as a swanky journalist is in the clinic to investigate a family secret. The play covers a broad canvas of current political and social issues, exploring the body as a site of political invasion and control.
Botchulism, written by Fregmonto Stokes, was first performed as a short play at the Carlton Courthouse during Mudfest 2007, and won the Mudfest 2007 Best Play Award, and a spot in the Fringe Festival. Following its selection for a UHT reading at the start of this year, Botchulism is now in a full-length form, to be performed in the Guild Theatre over two weeks in September under the direction of Reuben Brown.
