Puttin' a Cork in your Style

By Lizzee on 09 Dec 05

Pulling off your own style with street wear isn’t about flashy brands or labels. It’s about searching high and low to source out the coolest alternative gear without the high price.

Dig deep to uncover Melbourne’s local design talents at the ‘underground’ Corky Saint Clair. Venture down the dark Flinders Street subway underpass and be nicely rewarded with funky smooth street gear that sets you apart from the rest. After finishing off at RMIT, fashion lover Chris decided to put his passion for clothes into something more concrete. He opened shop and chose it's name after his favorite character – Corky St. Clair from the cult film ‘Waiting for Guffman’.

Corky Saint Clair carries a number of homebred brands that can’t be found elsewhere including it’s own house label Corky Saint Clair, Maru and Self Titled. Being well-connected is crucial to running a cool enough street store and most of the designers are friends of friends of friends.

The shop also caters to the new age boom of addicts going for AA (Accessories Anonymous) and sells heaps of handmade jewelry by LOVE, Lost in the Woods and Mingus. Choose from Perspex pendants or handcast silver earrings and rings to dazzle up your wardrobe.

Check out the artwork on the front door done by Monkey, step into the sounds of Indi-Pop and hip-hop compiled by DJ (Ro)mance and browse the racks. With subdued lighting, non-mainstream goods and a lotta punch to their attitude, Corky Saint Clair is your one-stop answer to raising the fashion stakes.
