great shop.
i love how this shop is kinda hidden in melb central, but is still totally accessible. with the first step you take inside, you already feel transported to a kooky new world. i love the hand drawn shirts and hand made toys! this store is awesome.
Way back before Melbourne girl Dana Lenko put her cutesy hand-drawn designs on bright tees and jumpers, she was a kid like anyone else and she loved inventing stories. Her all-time favourite story was about a cat and when she began her designing career, it was what inspired her first tee-shirt print – “I Like Cats, Cats Like Milk.”
Although Dana made many of her own clothes and school, she never foresaw the birth of Lenko. She studied Creative Arts in University and was training to become a filmmaker, which explains the television screening her films in the store. But her talent for taking ordinary clothes and giving them an innocent, yet cheeky twist shone through and she was soon flooded with orders for her designs.
In 2001, Lenko became a real brand and since then, together with her siblings, Dana has brought her work overseas and back, parading designs in Asian fashion weeks and stocking the shelves as far as London and Tokyo.
The first Lenko store carries not only the exclusive house label (with some designs tagged with serial numbers) but it also offers shoppers an array of funky street designers – ChipChop (bags), PFS, Karl, Pancake Zoo and Smittens. Lenko also produces a range of toys for the young at heart. As Dana explains herself, Lenko is about going back to a time in our youth and she hopes that her designs will strike that chord in your heart.
