Citylights Until Never

Fuelled by their passion for contemporary and street art, Andrew Mac and three of his friends set up the Citylights project – a non-profit organization celebrating the beauty and diversity of works from up and coming artists.
Mac realized that less people nowadays were visiting galleries, but they could never escape the omni-present glare of advertising. Using the same medium as advertising, he planned to open up their minds with art. And so was borne the concept of Light Boxes – artwork illuminated by light boxes similar to adverts found throughout the city.
While most boxes feature local artwork, several international artists like Space Invader (France), Muay Pariuudiphong (Thailand) and Lance Mountain (USA) have lent their talents. Mac also likes to support community-based artwork and is currently running a course for autistic artists. Searching for the Light boxes will take you to the dodgiest of alleys and finding them is a reward in itself. At night the glow from the light boxes illuminate the alley giving the space an almost spiritual light.
The latest incarnation of Citylights – the Until Never gallery showcases the stunning talents of emerging Melbourne artists. The current exhibition is one of Mac’s favourites, featuring Funky pieces from Papua New Guinean tribal masks to abstract paintings by street artists Phibs and Reka, and a 25-layer stencil work by legendary stencil artist Haha. The gallery’s name is based on a Spanish saying “Hasta Nanca” which means ‘until never’. Impossible though that may sound, it fits perfectly with the endless possibilities that art offers.
